Thoughts about teaching and Learning

My thoughts about teaching and learning

Learning can be explained as the active process of relating new meaning to an existing one, involving the assimilation and accommodation of ideas, skills, and thoughts. Making connections between past, present, and future which do not always follow a linear fashion since knowledge is constantly modified which can be affected by the use (content) to which learning is to be put. The effectiveness of learning is related to the content and to the goals. while the concept of teaching is the transmission of knowledge and facilitating the learning by the means of scaffolding the students to get them engaged in appropriate learning activities. So effective learning is related to an effective teacher that has several characteristics that aid in effective learning which is going to be discussed.

“We teach who we are”. This can sum up what is coming. So, if the teacher possesses effective characteristics this will be reflected directly in the learning process. In this case, the teacher will guide learning to be effective. When effective teachers hold high expectations for themselves and their students, students will be more motivated and will put more effort to achieve success. The teacher must be well prepared concerning time management, lesson plan, materials, etc. This leads to saving time and giving students the opportunity to make discussions and participate more. Therefore, we will have a student-centered class where interaction is enhanced. The effective teacher must set clear objectives and provide clear content for the students to achieve the targeted goal. This will lead to effective classroom organization. An effective teacher must seek a relationship between setting goals and achieving them.

Also, effective teachers should demonstrate effectiveness with the full range of students’ abilities in their classroom, regardless of the academic diversity of students. Thus, the teacher should use various techniques, learning styles, and methods. This variety meets with students’ needs and different learning styles. An effective teacher should be applying higher-order thinking skills and be attentive when and how to apply them because it’s recommended to be used with young learners. This can be applied through giving students challenging activities which will lead them to boost their intrinsic motivation and encourage their critical thinking in order to solve problems. Effective teachers can adopt the use of cooperative learning and feedback from and to students to develop metacognition which is a part of higher-order thinking. During cooperative activities, students can explore rather than being passive learners. Moreover, it is essential to make connections between students’ prior knowledge, the new knowledge they are acquiring, and real-life experiences. This will lead to reaching authentic learning where students will have a better understanding of topics and concepts.

Furthermore, effective teachers should be caring, fair, and respectful. Also, they have to be outstanding by being flexible and having a sense of humor in order to attract students’ attention taking into consideration classroom rules. In addition, effective teachers should be always up to date. Teaching effectiveness means the use of multimedia to enhance learning whereas teacher effectiveness is the personal competency of a teacher. Effective classroom climate is accomplished throughout these characteristics get the best out of each student.

To sum up, teacher effectiveness is the characteristic of a teacher to be a real instrument for the process of effective learning.
